Pictured here is the new 1inch 1/8 Thomson Elite X4 Stem. It’s a 0 degree rise and 100mm long. The shim also pictured takes the steerer tube from 1inch up to an Inch 1/8. Its quite rare these days to find bikes with 1inch headtubes. Some road bikes still use 1inch tubes but mountain bikes are 1inch 1/8 and now some freeride/dh bikes are 1inch 1/5.
Given this is a road bike i want to be comfortable when leaning right over the bike and digging in on the peddles, the extra stem length coupled with the 21.5inch frame should keep me comfortable over longer periods of staying in a low position. I need to remember this bike is not getting thrown around and steering precision is not a major factor here. It should still however be a pretty responsive ride by any standards.
I paid about $85 AUD for stem and was bought from Chain Reaction Cycles UK. I paid $5 US for the shim and $30 US for shipping! The shim was bought online from a US bike store called Smart Bike Parts. This part was quite hard to find but essential so had to bite the bullet on shipping costs.

Damn, you should have said. I’ve got a thompson shim in the attic and I doubt I’ll ever have a 1″ steerer for it. Oh well
